Introduction: Kaumarabhritya Tantra
Kaumarabhritya Tantra, in Sanskrit कौमरभ्रित्य तन्त्र, also known as बाल चिकित्सा, the section of Pediatrics, follows the school of Sage Kashyapa. Kashyapa Samhita is one of the texts on pediatrics for study. This section deals with pregnancy care, home delivery, lifespan tests, breastfeeding care, teething time care, food and behavior care, and diseases of the children.
Pregnancy Care
In the headline of pregnancy care, first of all, the subject of marriage and proper sexual intercourse has to be studied in the proper way to guide the couple for healthy issues, a son or a daughter, etc. The pregnancy signs; care of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd month’s pregnancy and hemorrhage; care of 4th month’s pregnancy and the particular diseases of the mother; care of 5th and 6th month’s pregnancy; care of 7th month’s pregnancy and itching; care of 8th month’s pregnancy and constipation; care of 9th month’s pregnancy and delivery time, proper food and behavior during the time of pregnancy, etc are very important to pay attention in the headline of pregnancy care.
Home Delivery
For easy home delivery, the following guidelines are very important to pay attention to. For example, care of delivery time and symptoms, care of labor pain and proper arrangement for delivery, proper skill for handling the fourth coming baby, encouraging lovely talks with the mother and investigation of her strength, precaution for complicated delivery, emergency attempt for complicated delivery, evacuation of the placenta, care of the mother and the newly born baby, hygienic atmosphere, proper diet, breastfeeding, etc.
Lifespan Test
The lifespan test of the newborn baby involves determining the physical conditions related to health, long life, moderate life, and short life. In this test, the investigation of the skin, head, facial organs, chest, stomach, hands, legs, and physical functions are very important to pay attention to. The signs of good health or bad health, long life, and short life depend upon the proportions and physical conditions which are well analyzed to study in the individual stage of life.
Breast Feeding Care
Breastfeeding care deals with the tests of mother milk to find out the good or bad condition of the milk. In general, the test of pure nutritive milk, a test of bad milk related to different pathogenic agents, a test of bad effects caused by defective milk, purification of the defective milk, etc.
Teething Time Care
The newborn baby can have teeth during the period of four to eight months. In general, the teeth that appear during the month of four to seven can have many problems. Fever and diarrhea are the main problems of a baby related to the wrong teeth. In addition, issues like weak teeth, sensitive teeth, dirty teeth, irregular teeth, etc are associated with complex dental problems. The teeth appearing after the seventh month are considered to be strong and good.
Food and Behavior Care
Proper and timely food care involves hygienic practices in breastfeeding, feeding animal milk, giving fruit juices, and introducing rice, among others. The hygienic atmosphere, neat and clean dress, proper handling, proper guidance, entertainment, prohibited dialogue, etc are the main subjects of behavior to look after the baby.
Children’s Diseases
Diseases in children are categorized into six distinct groups, focusing on issues related to 1) wrong conception, 2) pregnancy defects, 3) wrong delivery, 4) milk defects, 5) spiritual pathogenic agents, and 6) specific reasons.
Wrong Conception
Diseases linked to improper conception can lead to various health issues in children, including disabilities, weak health, and reduced life expectancy. These conditions stem from complications during the conception process, impacting the child’s health and development.
Pregnancy Defects
Pregnancy defects can lead to a range of health issues in the child, including disabilities, hair loss, fertility issues (impotency), sleep disorders, speech difficulties like aphasia or stammering, short height (dwarf), and various mental health challenges.
Wrong Delivery
Conditions such as an enlarged liver and spleen, disabilities, deformities, general weakness, and a shortened lifespan are often associated with complications during childbirth or wrong delivery. These health issues underscore the critical importance of proper delivery methods for the long-term well-being of a newborn.
Milk Defects
Milk defects or milk-related issues can lead to a variety of health problems in infants, including constipation, weight loss, gas, diarrhea, jaundice, candidiasis, and vomiting. Other serious conditions like rickets, poliomyelitis, beriberi, and blepharitis can also arise, along with a decreased appetite. These complications highlight the importance of ensuring the quality and suitability of milk for infant nutrition.
Spiritual Pathogenic Agents
Spiritual pathogenic agents are believed to be associated with various childhood illnesses such as poliomyelitis, infantile epilepsy, herpangina, immune deficiencies, gastroenteritis, rosacea, tetanus, leukemia, and others. This concept suggests that certain health issues in children may have a spiritual or non-physical dimension contributing to their onset or progression. Despite this perspective, it’s crucial that these conditions are accurately diagnosed and effectively treated with appropriate medical interventions. Understanding and addressing these agents can be an integral part of ensuring comprehensive care in treating these complex pediatric diseases.
Specific Reasons Diseases
In the field of pediatrics, particular emphasis is placed on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that have specific reasons or causes, such as congenital diseases, genetic diseases, epidemic diseases, etc. The proper diagnosis and treatment of them are very important in the section of pediatrics.
